On Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, the United States Air Force Band came to perform for all lunches at Cypress Ranch High School. The event was a promotional tool by the Air Force to help recruit more students into their program but served as great entertainment for students and staff. In between renditions of the latest pop songs, there were serious discussions of both the importance of the Air Force and the benefits of enlisting. Although, the event was a fun tactic of advertisement, students enjoyed the upbeat nature of the music being played, which is not typically associated with military organizations.

“I think it was good for a change, as you do not get these chances [to see this side of the Air Force],” said junior Michelle Mwololo. “It was fun and it was enjoyable,”

The Air Force band played classic rock hits and modern pop songs such as Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses. The quality of performance by the Air Force members was impressive. It was a polished, more refined product that one might not expect from a military organization. The songs played did not have the solid , dull rhythm that frequently stems from the perception of a military band, but instead a more laid back and relaxed atmosphere that resembled an enjoyable social event rather than a military routine.

“It was really fun and it was really hectic,” said student Anthony Wood. “It was one of the most fun things I have ever been a part of.”

The excitement for the event was obvious as students stood on top of the lunch tables to better hear the live music. Crowd members danced and sang as some of the band walked off the stage and into the eating areas to join the banter.

The Air Force Band performance proved how music can create a positive, uplifting environment while still educating students. The display from the Air Force members showed young members of society that participating in military organizations is lively and rewarding.
